Many people remain unaware that the moon looks distinct in the United States compared to Australia, and I must admit, I was once among them.
An Australian named Corey took to TikTok and seemingly enlightened many individuals globally.
He remarked: “Why the f*** are we not shown in schools that the way we see the moon in the southern hemisphere is upside down to the way it’s seen in the northern hemisphere, and vice versa.
“I moved to a different hemisphere, and I still didn’t realize it until years in, and I knew something was up but I just couldn’t f***ing put my finger on it – this is what was up!”
Corey elaborated further: “This is because if you’re in the southern hemisphere you have to look north to see the moon, and if you’re in the northern hemisphere, you have to look south to see the moon.
@coreyyy.exe they were bloody right we are upside down in Australia smh
“So, the way you see the moon in Brazil is different to how you see it in England, and the way you see the moon in New Zealand is different to how you see it in Japan. No one talks about it, why?
“I want to see some flat earthers have a crack at this one as well, see what they have to say.”
Over 500 people quickly commented on the revelation.
“Ok, I understand it, but I also don’t understand it,” one person noted.
Another inquired: “But what about the middle? Where does it ‘flip’?”
“Dude the sky looks different in the southern hemisphere. I can’t explain it but it’s true,” added someone else.
Not everyone feels they missed out on this knowledge in their youth, as one commenter mentioned they learned about this phenomenon in a German school back in the 1980s.
But there’s more—depending on your location, the crescent moon’s orientation can differ.
If you’re situated near the equator, a crescent moon will appear at the very top or bottom.
In contrast, in the northern and southern hemispheres, a crescent moon resembles the DreamWorks depiction with the boy fishing off it, positioned either to the right or the left.
“I went to Egypt and saw the bottom half of the moon and it blew my mind. I’d never seen it like that before,” one person mentioned on TikTok.
Another shared: “This blew my mind when I was in Jordan last year – I was so confused why the crescent was in a weird position.”
