A body language analyst has dissected the moment when Melania Trump appeared to turn away from Donald Trump during his presidential inauguration, avoiding his attempt to kiss her.
During his second inauguration on January 20, Donald Trump outlined his future plans as the 47th president. Before his speech, he and his wife, Melania Trump, attended a church service marking the inauguration’s start and Joe Biden’s term’s end.

However, outside the chamber, Trump seemed to try to kiss Melania in a tender moment, but she turned her face to opt for a cheek kiss instead.

Body language expert Judi James analyzed this moment, sharing her insights with Paddy Power. She described Trump as entering with a “slow alpha presence” and a “mouth shrug smile,” signaling a serious demeanor. When Trump reached for Melania, James noted he took her hand tenderly, likening it to a romantic gesture seen during wedding ceremonies.

James explained that Trump leaned in for a kiss and, for a moment, appeared to be aiming for a lip-to-lip connection. However, Melania turned her face, initiating a cheek kiss instead.

This momentary misalignment was described by James as “heart-stopping,” suggesting that their coordination might have been slightly off. Ultimately, Trump settled for an air kiss, while they made a small “mwa” sound with their mouths, creating the illusion of contact.

James concluded that Melania seemed content with the interaction, highlighting her smile as a sign of acknowledgment, recognition, and partnership with Trump in the White House.

Another body language expert, Darren Stanton, commented on Melania’s choice of attire during the event. Speaking for Betfair Casino, Stanton noted that her “big fedora” could serve to conceal her face if desired, and found her navy blue outfit a peculiar choice given that blue is associated with the Democrats.

Stanton observed that throughout the inauguration, the couple showed “little to no emotion” and refrained from holding hands. He remarked that the event seemed solemn, as indicated by their lack of eye contact, smiles, or emotions. Melania’s demeanor suggested she was not eager to be present, with no subtle expressions of happiness.
