Kate Middleton Makes Surprise Return to Royal Duties After Completing Chemotherapy

Kate Middleton

 and

Prince William

are honoring a grieving community together.

The Princess of Wales and her husband of 13 years—who share kids

Prince George

, 11,

Princess Charlotte

, 9, and

Prince Louis

, 6—stepped out for a visit to Southport, U.K. together Oct. 10, marking the couple’s first joint engagement since Kate announced she had completed chemotherapy.

The visit saw the royals pay their respects to the community after three young girls—

Alice Dasilva Aguiar

, 9,

Elsie Dot Stancombe

, 7, and

Bebe King

, 6—were fatally stabbed and 10 more people were critically injured outside a

Taylor Swift

-themed dance and yoga event in July.

For the outing, Kate wore a red and white polka dot dress with a long brown coat, while William wore a gray tweed jacket, a maroon sweater with a white shirt and tie, and black slacks. The couple first met and greeted the emergency responders who assisted in the aftermath of the attacks, as well as later meeting with the families of the three deceased victims in private.

Kate and William, both 42, wanted to emphasize that despite their delay in visiting the community, the attacks had not been forgotten, ITV News reporter

Chris Ship

 shared on X, formerly Twitter.

Meanwhile, the Eras Tour performer previously paid her respects after the tragedy—also arranging a special visit with some of the families affected during her August stop in London, and sharing a statement shortly after the attack.

“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I’m just completely in shock,” Taylor wrote on Instagram July 30. “The loss of life and innocence, and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families, and first responders.”

She added, “These were just little kids at a dance class—I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

King Charles III

—who is currently undergoing cancer treatment of his own—also made a trip to the seaside town to support those affected by the loss in August.

During his visit, the king gave a rare health update, telling someone in the crowd who asked how he was feeling, “I’m not too bad.”

And while Kate and William’s joint visit to pay respects in Southport is a milestone for the Princess of Wales’ health journey, she previously emphasized that she is still focusing on staying cancer free.

“I must continue to take each day as it comes,” Kate shared in a Sept. 9 Instagram post. “I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.”
