In the video, Carey is seated on the floor in front of a radiant Christmas tree. Her twins, Monroe and Moroccan, stand beside her, looking less enthusiastic and wearing non-festive black attire.
“Mom, please, we don’t want to do this every time!” they exclaimed, though Carey wouldn’t relent.
“It’s just being festive!” she responded, continuing, “It’s not every-“
At this point, Carey interrupted herself to sing the well-known lyrics, “I don’t want a lot for Christmas,” which led to her kids dramatically exiting the frame, clearly not wanting to hear any more of the song.
The video garnered over a million likes from her followers, with Carey clarifying that it was all in good fun, inspired by the Christmas spirit.
She captioned the video: “Had to do it. Merry Christmas Eve!!”
Despite the playful teasing from her children, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” remains a beloved holiday classic.
On December 16, the song marked its 16th week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, tying for the third-longest reign in the chart’s 66-year history, following Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road”.
This track is also among the longest-leading No. 1s by a female artist on the Hot 100, especially impressive as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
In 2019, Carey described the song as “one of [her] greatest achievements” to Variety.
She also mentioned in her Amazon Music documentary, Mariah Carey is Christmas: The Story of ‘All I Want for Christmas is You,’ that the song “was done very quickly and kind of came out organically, which the best songs do.”
