Sharing her experience on Twitter, user @applekaurr recounted the incident through a series of tweets. On Christmas Eve, she mentioned that it was ‘movie day with the fam’ and she had been given the responsibility of choosing the film.
Unfortunately, things took a negative turn less than thirty minutes into the movie.
She tweeted: “It has been turned off & i’ve been told to go for a walk.”
Alongside her post was a screenshot of a text from her mom, which read: “When you come back I want you to apologise to everyone you d**khead.”
So, what was this film that warranted such a reaction? Enter Barry Keoghan.
The movie in question is the 2023 release Saltburn, crafted by writer, director, and co-producer Emerald Fennell.
It tells the story of Oxford University student Oliver Quick (Keoghan) who becomes infatuated with a wealthy peer (Jacob Elordi) and is invited to spend the summer at his friend’s lavish estate.
While the film delves into themes of class divisions, obsession, and wealth, it is particularly noted online for its abundance of R-rated scenes.
Even if you haven’t watched it, you might have heard of the infamous ‘bathtub scene’—certainly not a film suited for family or holiday viewing.
Social media users quickly chimed in on the woman’s predicament after she played Saltburn for her family on Christmas Eve.
One commenter suggested: “They should make you clean the tub as punishment.”
Another observed: “Seeing it be near the top of [Amazon] Prime most watched during the Christmas weekend like ‘oh they’re ruining a LOT of family gatherings’ and I’m so glad to hear I was right.”
A third remarked: “Watched it as well today, mom joined me halfway through and told me I need psychiatric help for sitting through the entire thing.”
The original poster later identified the scene that was the tipping point for her family. “It was the bath scene that did it,” she clarified.
Perhaps opting for Home Alone or Love Actually might be a safer bet next time…
