Embracing Dry January has become increasingly manageable with the introduction of a non-alcoholic spirit that claims to offer a ‘gentle buzz’ akin to that of traditional alcohol.
Every year, many individuals worldwide commit to a month of sobriety known as Dry January.

Various motivations exist for taking a break from alcohol for this period. Perhaps the festive season saw an overindulgence in cocktails, or there is a desire to explore a healthier, more sober lifestyle as part of a ‘New Year, New Me’ initiative.

Regardless of the reason, reducing alcohol consumption can positively impact health and cognitive abilities, while also saving money, increasing energy levels, and promoting weight loss, according to the NHS.

If you’re seeking an alternative to your usual evening drink, Sentia Spirits, a non-alcoholic option, might be the answer.

Sentia is a zero percent ABV beverage developed by Professor David Nutt, a neuropsychopharmacologist dedicated to studying the effects of alcohol and drugs on the human body.

In 2021, he introduced Sentia Spirits, promising a beverage that makes people ‘more sociable’ and relaxed.

“It’s a drink that is based on the science of alcohol, particularly the low doses of alcohol that relax you and make you more sociable,” he explained to The Independent.

“We’ve spent years researching the biochemistry of herbs to find ones which contain GABA molecules, and also those which have a track record of producing relaxation and calming effects.”

This botanical spirit, termed a ‘GABA spirit’ by Nutt, is crafted to simulate the effects of alcohol on the brain, aiming to soothe the nervous system without the consequences of a hangover.

Jesus College Cambridge notes that Sentia uses naturally-occurring botanicals to produce drinks, marking it as a pioneering step towards healthier and safer social drinking.

While Nutt acknowledges that alcohol will likely retain its popularity, he hopes his product will encourage socializing without relying on alcohol.

Currently, three Sentia flavors are available for purchase: Sentia Red, Sentia Black, and a vibrant Gold.

Sentia Black is tailored for social events like parties, while Sentia Red, with its bittersweet berry flavor, is ideal for unwinding on weekdays.

On the other hand, the Gold edition is perfect for adding warmth and wellness to social gatherings, making it an excellent choice for spontaneous get-togethers.

The drink can be enjoyed neat, with a mixer, or even crafted into a cocktail.

According to The Independent, GABA Labs plans to complete FDA testing of alcarelle in the US by 2026, with a goal to have the ingredient available by 2027.

Until then, Sentia spirits offer a way to enjoy a vibrant sober lifestyle without missing out on the social experience.

Numerous drinkers of non-alcoholic spirits have already been encouraged to try Sentia. One customer noted they ‘definitely got a buzz, felt smiley and chilled almost immediately and stayed that way for quite a while. Felt fine the next morning too’.

Another commented: “A gentle buzz and a nice new addition to the drinks cabinet.”

“First time trying and was a bit unsure, but gave me a slight nice calm feeling after one glass, taste is down to personal preference but with a mixer it was quite enjoyable. It is quite expensive but I’d buy again once this bottle is done as it’s unique and no longer drink alcohol,” observed another individual.

Sentia’s non-alcoholic spirit is currently available for purchase on Amazon.
