When asked about Donald Trump’s slogan to ‘make America great again,’ Dick Van Dyke delivered a harsh ten-word answer.
Earlier this month, President-Elect Trump, age 78, secured his victory in the 2024 presidential election, garnering 312 Electoral College votes and winning all seven key battleground states.
Trump, who triumphed over his Democratic opponent, current Vice President Kamala Harris, age 60, is scheduled to return to Washington D.C. on January 20, 2025, to begin his second term as the President of the United States.
Several celebrities, including Elon Musk, Mel Gibson, and Jeff Bezos, have openly supported the Republican leader, whereas singer Billie Eilish called his win a ‘war on women’.
Another notable figure expressing dissatisfaction with Trump’s expected return to the White House is Dick Van Dyke.
The legendary entertainer, approaching his 99th birthday on December 13, had previously announced his support for Harris, urging his fans to vote for her.
In a message on his official YouTube channel, the Mary Poppins star remarked: “Hatred is not the norm. Prejudice is not the norm. Suspicion, dislike, jealousy, scapegoating, none of those are the transcendent facets of the human personality.
“They are diseases. They are the cancers of the soul. They are the infectious and contagious viruses that have been breeding humanity for years.”
Van Dyke has now voiced his opinion on Trump officially becoming the 47th President of the United States.
In a video released by the Daily Mail, Van Dyke was approached by paparazzi asking if he believed Trump would ‘make America great again’ as his slogan suggested.
In the company of his wife Arlene Silver, 53, Van Dyke replied: “Fortunately, I won’t be around to experience the four years.”
The photographer further asked if Van Dyke thought the ‘future looked bright’ with Trump’s administration, to which he answered: “I hope you’re right!”
Earlier this year, the Hollywood icon expressed that he was still ‘looking for work’ as he approached his 99th birthday.
Van Dyke attended the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in September where he received an award for his 2023 birthday special, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic, and addressed the press.
A reporter at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre asked how he wished to be remembered in the future, to which he responded: “For laughter. I hope for making people laugh for 75 years.”
He added: “I’ve been in the business 75 years. I can’t believe that I’m still here and performing.”
According to People Magazine, he then scanned the room and humorously stated: “I’m looking for work if anybody has,” accompanied by a chuckle.
