During the adoption storyline, Juno forms a connection with Mark over music. It’s in a specific scene discussing baby names that Page now wishes he had objected to a particular line.
In a 2017 interview with Bustle, three years prior to coming out as transgender, Page addressed his feelings about the scene.
“It wasn’t something I totally registered at the time,” he explained.
The line in question occurs when Mark suggests the name Madison for the baby, and Juno quips, “Isn’t that a little gay?”
As he has matured, Page shared with Bustle that he now comprehends the impact of such comments.
“Now that I’m older I do. So many movies I loved as a kid are just rampant with homophobia and transphobia and biphobia, and I’m not excusing it by any means,” he stated.
Acknowledging this, Page chose to omit the joke when performing the script of “Juno” for Planned Parenthood.
Following his public coming out as transgender, Page’s transition was incorporated into the storyline of the Netflix series “The Umbrella Academy,” where he plays Viktor Hargreeves.
Page praised showrunner Steve Blackman for his support, saying: “I called him nervously and he was incredible. If anything, he was the one who was very insistent on immediately having it be a part of the show and supported me to be able to access the care I was hoping to get at that time.”
In an interview with Time Magazine, Page highlighted the ‘lack of representation for trans people’ in Hollywood, endeavoring to be a visible advocate for the LGBTQ+ community since his transition.
“Hope for me is for those who continuously resist and support each other,” he conveyed to the magazine.
Page announced his transition on Instagram, reflecting on the moment as feeling ‘utterly elated and beyond grateful to finally be in a place’ where he could ‘accept and love’ himself.
