From iconic films like IT and Carrie to The Shining, chances are you’ve encountered a King adaptation, even if only through a trailer if horror isn’t your preference.
Currently, Netflix offers a vast array of King adaptations, including Mike Flanagan’s chilling take on Gerald’s Game.
Adapted from King’s 1992 novel, the plot follows Jessie and Gerald Burlingame as they visit a remote lake house in Alabama for a romantic getaway.
Tragedy strikes when Gerald dies accidentally during intimate moments, leading Jessie into a state of delirium as per the Gerald’s Game synopsis: “Handcuffed to the bed, she soon becomes delirious.”
Though released several years ago, a Netflix fan recently sparked discussion about Gerald’s Game in the Netflix Bangers Facebook group, seeking opinions on the film.
One comment read: “Good movie, even better book!”
Another viewer mentioned: “Loved it – seen it 3x lol,” adding that while some scenes are uncomfortable, it’s worth watching.
Another fan declared, “Well it is Stephen King!!!!! It’s good!!!”
In contrast, one warning stated: “Be careful. The big climactic scene made me sick to my stomach. I had to take a break before I could come back and finish watching it.”
Another person described it simply as ‘terrifying’.
When Gerald’s Game first released in 2017, one viewer reported nearly fainting while watching.
The Twitter user expressed: “Okay, I genuinely nearly just passed out. #GeraldsGame has been on pause for ten minutes. A film has NEVER affected me like that before.”
In a follow-up tweet, they mentioned: “Can’t believe it affected me like it did. I swear I’ve seen worse. But I genuinely felt faint. Had to run to the loo and everything.”
Despite its intensely graphic scenes, Gerald’s Game holds an impressive 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
One critic praised the film, claiming it surpassed the book in quality.
“There are few movies that manage to outdo their source material,” they wrote on the review site.
“There are fewer still movies that are based on a Stephen King book and still manage to outdo the source material. Netflix original film Gerald’s Game is one such movie.”
