Interstellar fans are abuzz with a “mind-blowing” new theory about the movie as it becomes available on Netflix.
Christopher Nolan’s celebrated space saga, featuring Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, Michael Caine, and Anne Hathaway, first captivated viewers in theaters over a decade ago.

To mark its 10th anniversary, Interstellar was re-released on December 6, 2024, in more than 160 IMAX theaters across North America. The demand was so high that the screenings were extended to 321 screens for a second week.

According to Forbes, the film earned $15.2 million during its two-week anniversary run. As of January 1, it is now available for streaming on Netflix.

With an impressive 8.7 out of 10 rating on IMDb, the film follows former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (McConaughey) as he searches for a new habitable planet after Earth becomes unsustainable for human life.

Fans, thrilled by the movie’s return, are now discussing theories, including a potential oversight spotted by TikToker Alex Stark, who believes it could alter one’s perception of the film.

Alex shared on TikTok: “I just rewatched Interstellar and I noticed what seems like a mistake – I just cannot un-see this.”

He continued: “So the same footage is being used twice in completely different contexts. First, right in the beginning when Cooper has his crash dream sequence.”

He points out the footage on the aircraft screen, saying, “look at this, remember this footage?” before jumping over an hour into the film.

Alex points again: “There, when they’re entering Miller’s planet[‘s] atmosphere, it’s the exact same footage. At first, I thought it was a simple mistake, but then I realized, this is Christopher Nolan – Christopher Nolan wouldn’t reuse the same footage without a purpose, right?

“It didn’t make sense until I looked at it from another perspective.”

Rewinding to the film’s opening scene, Alex elaborates: “This is the opening scene, and we see a crash in which that person inside that crash realistically should have died, so what if that actually happened?”

“What if Cooper actually died in that accident right in the beginning of the movie, and I usually dismiss these Cooper is dead theories, but… I continued watching the movie with this theory in my mind and oh boy, does it change everything.

“So he dies and then everything we see from there is his journey into the afterlife – he can’t stay on earth and has to leave.”

This theory has left fans in awe, with one stating: “We need Christopher Nolan to confirm this otherwise I won’t sleep for another 6 months.”

Another fan remarked: “My brain still hurts from Tenet. I’m not ready for another Christopher Nolan theory.”

A third commented: “That means, that Interstellar has no beginning, and no ending.”
